How deep can your GPR scanner detect objects?

It depends on what we are scanning, because we operate two different machines. In concrete, our Proceq GP8000 scans up to 1.5 metres deep — more than enough to cover slabs, walls, beams and columns, where rebar and post-tension cables typically sit within the first 10–30cm. In ground and soil, our Proceq GS8000 reaches a maximum of 10 metres, and in UAE ground typically 5–10 metres depending on soil conditions: dry sand allows deeper penetration, while wet ground or heavy clay reduces it. That is the machine we use to locate buried utilities before excavation. Detection accuracy is within ±10mm under ideal conditions. Our technicians will advise during consultation if your site conditions — wet concrete, heavy rebar density, or saturated soil — are likely to affect the achievable depth or resolution.

What sizes of core holes can you cut?

We provide diamond core cutting in diameters from 12mm to 500mm, covering virtually every construction and MEP requirement. Common sizes include 50mm for anchor bolts, 75mm and 100mm for electrical conduits, 150mm for drainage and plumbing penetrations, and 200mm to 300mm for HVAC ductwork and mechanical risers. Larger openings up to 500mm are used for structural openings and main service entries. The Proceq GP8000 is our concrete scanner: it operates across a wide frequency range (200 MHz – 4 GHz), delivers real-time 3D visualization on an integrated display, scans up to 1.5 metres into concrete, and achieves positional accuracy within ±10mm. The Proceq GS8000 is our ground scanner, used for locating buried utilities before excavation: it uses stepped-frequency technology across a 0.2–3.4 GHz bandwidth and reaches up to 10 metres into soil depending on ground conditions. Both are manufactured in Switzerland, used by leading contractors and consultants worldwide, and regularly calibrated and maintained to manufacturer standards.

How long does a GPR scan typically take?

Scan duration depends on the area size, slab complexity, and number of scan points required. A standard single-zone slab scan of 20–30 m² takes 1–2 hours including site setup, scanning, data analysis, and surface marking. A typical floor plate of 200–500 m² may take a full working day. Multi-floor projects are scheduled across consecutive days. For urgent pre-drilling scans — where a contractor needs a single penetration point confirmed — we can often complete the scan, mark the safe zone, and issue a report within 2 hours of arrival. Is GPR scanning safe?

Yes, GPR scanning is completely safe and non-destructive. The Proceq GP8000 uses low-power electromagnetic pulses in the radio frequency range — similar in principle to Wi-Fi signals — and emits no ionising radiation whatsoever. Unlike X-ray concrete scanning, GPR requires no radiation shielding, no area clearance, and no special safety permits. Operators, nearby workers, building occupants, and the structure itself are all unaffected. The scanner surface never makes contact with the concrete under test — it glides across it — so there is zero damage to finishes, coatings, or waterproofing membranes. GPR scanning can be performed in occupied buildings, hospitals, data centres, and sensitive environments without disruption. It is recognised as a safe non-destructive testing method under ACI 228 and EN 13290 international standards.

Do you provide reports after scanning?

Yes. Every scan job includes a professional report delivered in PDF format, typically within 24 hours of the site visit. The report includes annotated plan drawings showing the location, depth, and orientation of detected objects (rebar, post-tension cables, conduits, voids), colour-coded safe drilling zones marked directly on the concrete surface, depth measurements for each identified object, and clear recommendations for where cutting or drilling can safely proceed. For Proceq GP8000 scans we can also export 3D rendered data via the Proceq Link platform, which is compatible with BIM coordination workflows. Physical surface markings are applied on the day of the scan using paint or chalk, and remain visible for the duration of your drilling or cutting works. Accidentally cutting a post-tension cable can cause immediate slab collapse, endangering lives and causing severe structural damage that costs far more to repair than the original project. Do you scan the ground before excavation?

Yes — always. Before we excavate, we scan. Every excavation job begins with a GPR survey of the dig area using our Proceq GS8000 ground scanner, which reads up to 10 metres into the soil depending on ground conditions. We locate and mark buried power cables, water and sewer lines, telecom ducts, gas pipes, tanks and voids on the surface, and agree the safe dig limits with you before any machine breaks ground. Striking a live service during excavation causes injuries, utility shutdowns, authority penalties and repair bills that dwarf the cost of a scan. Because scanning and excavation are both done in-house by Bhadeya Technical, there is no waiting on a third-party surveyor and no gap in responsibility between the survey and the dig.

What is the difference between the GP8000 and the GS8000?

They are two different machines for two different jobs. The Proceq GP8000 is a concrete scanner — it images the inside of slabs, walls, beams and columns to find rebar, post-tension cables, conduits and voids, with a scanning depth of up to 1.5 metres in concrete. It is what we use before core cutting or drilling. The Proceq GS8000 is a ground scanner, mounted on a survey cart — it maps buried utilities in soil to a maximum of 10 metres depending on ground conditions, covering large areas such as roads, yards and open sites quickly. It is what we use before excavation. Bhadeya Technical operates both, so whether the target is concrete or ground, the correct instrument is used rather than the nearest one available.

Do you provide interlock and road pavement works?

Yes. We lay, repair and re-level interlock paving and carry out road pavement works for driveways, parking areas, warehouse yards, walkways and internal site roads across the UAE. This includes excavation, sub-base preparation and compaction, kerbstones and edge restraints, accurate levels and falls for drainage, block cutting, and reinstatement of sunken or uneven paving. Most interlock failures are sub-base failures, not tile failures — paving sinks because the ground beneath it was never compacted or levelled correctly. Since we handle the excavation, ground scanning and compaction ourselves, the layer that actually carries the load is done properly, and you deal with one contractor from the dig to the finished surface.

How much does GPR scanning cost in Dubai?

Cost is driven mainly by the area that needs scanning rather than the number of holes, because clearing a single position still means scanning a zone around it. Twenty penetrations clustered in one bay are far cheaper per hole than one isolated core in a large floor plate. The other factors that genuinely move the price are access and mobilisation — a ground-floor warehouse in Al Quoz is a different job from level 34 of a Business Bay tower — whether the work has to happen outside trading hours in an occupied building, what documentation you need at the end, and how urgently you need us. How quickly can you get to site?

For most Dubai and Sharjah locations we can attend the same day or the following morning, and next-day is normal for Abu Dhabi city and the surrounding zones. The realistic constraint is usually not our availability but the site itself: where a permit to work is required — common on ADNOC, government and larger Abu Dhabi projects — the approval process sets the timeline, and where gate passes or site inductions are needed we arrange those before mobilising rather than losing a day at the gate. Can you scan or cut in an occupied building or outside working hours?

Accepted Answer

Yes, and a large share of our Dubai work is exactly this — trading malls, live hotels and occupied offices where the work has to happen at night or during shutdown windows. GPR is well suited to it because it is non-destructive and needs no exclusion zone or radiation shielding, unlike X-ray, so adjacent areas can stay occupied while we scan. For core cutting in occupied buildings we manage slurry and water containment so the area can be handed back clean and in use the following morning. Where the building requires a permit or a security escort for out-of-hours access, we work to that process.

What happens if you find a cable exactly where we need to cut?

Accepted Answer

We stop and tell you before anything is cut. In most cases the position can be shifted by a small amount to clear the obstruction, and we mark the nearest safe alternative directly on the surface so your crew can proceed the same visit. Where the position genuinely cannot move — a fixed MEP penetration or a structural opening — that becomes a design conversation with your engineer or consultant rather than something we cut through and report afterwards. We would rather deliver an inconvenient finding than a convenient one that turns into a structural incident.

Is GPR better than X-ray for concrete scanning?

Accepted Answer

For most UAE concrete scanning, yes — but not universally. GPR works from a single accessible face, needs no radiation exclusion zone, and gives real-time results the operator can mark straight onto the slab, which is why it has largely replaced X-ray on occupied buildings, ground-bearing slabs, rafts and retaining walls where X-ray is either impractical or impossible. X-ray does produce a clearer image in very heavily congested reinforcement, and is better at separating objects stacked directly above one another, but it requires access to both faces of the element and the area must be cleared on both sides. If you can reach both faces, clear the area, and need to resolve fine detail in congested concrete, X-ray will give the better image. For everything else, GPR is the appropriate method.
